When applying for a NIF number remotely, the Portuguese tax authorities must check the applicant's identity and the veracity of the application, and you must appoint a tax representative.
In Portugal, only certain professions have the authority to certify your identity and the fact that you really need a NIF: lawyers, notaries and accountants.
In our case, our lawyer based in Portugal acts as your tax representative. She certifies that you are a real person and that you really need a NIF.
This fiscal representation is therefore compulsory if you want to apply for a NIF remotely: it is included in the initial payment, for a period of one month.
